Anthropic grows revenue twelvefold but posts $23 billion loss

Revenue rises sharply, costs rise faster

According to Bloomberg, cited by The Decoder (DE), Anthropic posted quarterly revenue of nearly $17 billion. According to the report, that is twelve times what it brought in a year earlier. Operating costs were $17.5 billion according to The Information, above revenue. The previous quarter had shown a profit, according to The Information.

Loss and drivers

According to The Decoder (DE), the net loss for the quarter was $23.3 billion. Anthropic points to $5 billion for short-term compute capacity and $2 billion in doubled employee donation matching as main drivers.

What this means for the IPO

According to the New York Times, the costs add pressure on the IPO, which could raise around $100 billion. Up to $3.5 billion of that is expected from Japanese investors, according to Nikkei. Whether growth can carry these expenses is, based on the available sources, still open.
