According to an internal circular reported by the IT magazine 404 Media, employees of Swiss IT company Proton must attend a new interview in which they explain how they use AI. The circular says the interviews could "lead to changes regarding tasks, responsibilities and continued employment". According to 404 Media, the company is looking for people who can translate AI capabilities into better products and new ways of working.
Who conducts the interviews?
According to the report, the interviews are not conducted by direct supervisors but by a group of "senior employees" who have reportedly already demonstrated "strong AI capabilities". According to the circular, the AI interviews are scheduled to take place between 4 and 11 November. Not all employees are affected; how the selection is made remained unclear at first.
Company response
Proton declined to comment on the circular to 404 Media. The company later stated, according to the report, that it is not cutting jobs and is not using AI as a pretext for doing so. The circular itself reportedly acknowledges that the announcement could cause uncertainty.
Context
The case shows that AI competence can increasingly appear as a selection and evaluation criterion in companies. Whether this leads to changes for the workforce remains open based on the available reporting.
